FREE VIDEO: VMware Server & Workstation Video Series Demo

I am excited to say that my VMware Server & Workstation video training course is officially available!

After creating the popular Microsoft Virtualization video series, I moved on to VMware virtualization. Because VMware has the lion share of the virtualization market, I believe that this new video will be even more popular than the Microsoft video!

To create this video training, I spent 3 months researching VMware Workstation & Server. I made every effort cover the VMware products from all aspects including designing, installing, creating virtual machines, virtual networks, storage, backups, and performance tuning. Once we covered Server & Workstation, we moved on to our VMware ESX Server overview and our bonus video, VMware ACE.

To view the free 7 minute training video demo covering VMware Player, just click here to go to Train Signal’s website.

Do you need Internet Bandwidth? Quote it here!

So you need some bandwidth? It could be voice, private line/MPLS, or Internet bandwidth. Who are you going to call?

Don’t waste your time calling every carrier out there and try to compare the pricing yourself. Trust me, I’ve been there, you could spend the next six months doing that.

Happy Router .com has partnered with a reliable and honest telecom partner. I have used this partner myself for T1, DS3, Internet, MPLS, Long distance, and local services.

How does this work? Fill out this form. Your information will be passed to our partner. They will listen to your needs and contact ALL the carriers to get you a competitive quote (including local loops) fast. They can also manage the installation process and even manage the network after it is installed.

Give them a try, your contact details remain confidential, you’ve nothing to lose!

*Please note that our partner only provides services in the USA and only to businesses **

Exclusive Photos from John Chambers Keynote Address – Cisco Networkers Live 2007

On July 24, 2007 Cisco CEO, made his keynote address at the 18th annual Cisco Networkers
conference. This year, the conference is dubbed "Cisco Live 2007" and it was
held in Anaheim, California.

John Chambers talked about Cisco's vision for next-generation data centers,
called. According to Cisco, "the Cisco vision for Data Center 3.0
entails the real-time, dynamic orchestration of infrastructure services from
shared pools of virtualized server, storage and network resources, while
optimizing application performance, service levels, efficiency and
collaboration."

Thanks to my colleague, Mr Pile, I bring you exclusive high resolution photos
that were taken "up close and personal".

What’s the difference between ARP, Reverse ARP, & Inverse ARP?

I was recently contacted by a HappyRouter member who posed a great question about the difference between ARP, RARP, and inverse ARP. I felt that the answer to this question might help others and, especially, those studying for the Cisco CCNA exam. So what is the different between these three? Let’s find out…

“Regular” ARP

The most common use of ARP is what I discussed in this article on ARP caching. That is just “regular ARP”. With ARP, your PC, let’s say, is trying to get an Ethernet MAC address for an IP address.

If you use a packet sniffer like Ethereal / Wireshark, you will see ARP requests just streaming across a production network (they are all broadcasts and go to every station).

Then, there is RARP (reverse ARP) where your PC has a MAC address and is trying to get an IP address for it. Today, RARP is pretty much obsolete because every one uses DHCP.

Inverse ARP

Then, you have inverse ARP (called InARP). Now, Happy Router member tuongdq posted some great information on how inverse ARP is used with Frame-Relay. This information is “spot on”. He is correct that inverse ARP can be used with frame relay. Inverse ARP can also be used with ATM. InARP is used to find the Layer 3 address from a Layer 2 address (the DLCI in frame relay). With frame, when using
inverse ARP, you know the DLCI of the remote router but you don’t know its IP address. Inverse ARP sends a request to obtain that IP address and map it to the Layer 2 frame-relay DLCI. However, it is always recommended to disable & not use inverse ARP because your frame end points could get different IP’s if the network were to be ‘bounced’.

If you are in for some “techie” reading on these different types of ARP, you can always check out the RFC’s:

  • RFC 826 – Address Resolution Protocol
  • RFC 903 – Reverse Address Resolution Protocol
  • RFC 2390 – Inverse Address Resolution Protocol

Also, if you are still looking for MORE information on ARP, you might want to learn what a Gratuitous ARP is…

Latest VMware Virtualization news & notes from the VMware Symposia

Recently, I attended the VMware Symposia in Dallas, Texas, USA. This event was free and was put on by VMware to promote their virtualization offerings.

I must say that I was highly impressed by all that they must have spent and prepared for this event. There were 100s of people there and it was at one of the finest hotels in town, the Gaylord Texas Resort.

I have authored training videos on both Microsoft Virtual Server and VMware Server & recently obtained my VMware Certified Professional (VCP) certification so I felt very confident in the current state of my virtualization
knowledge. Because of this, I wasnt sure that I would learn a lot from the event. I was pleasantly surprised when I was able to learn so much about the future of VMwares virtualization line-up. I took copious notes. When I got backto the office, I rearranged and cleaned up these notes.

I post these notes here so that all the HappyRouter.com members can benefit from the latest virtualization what I learned at the VMware Symposia.

How to Select equipment for CCNA Studies

Recently, I received a PM from a HappyRouter.com member, asking for help in selecting equipment for his CCNA studies. There are a ton of choices out there and a lot of vendors trying to push equipment on new users that they may or may not need.

In the dialog below, you will see how I made the following recommendations to our member:

1) You don’t have to buy equipment for CCNA preparation but it will help you learn more and retain what you need for the test

2) Only get the most basic equipment needed, such as Cisco 2500 series routers. In fact, you should be able to spend no more than $300 to get a couple of routers and a switch.

3) For learning concepts and seeing how things should work in the Cisco IOS, take a look at the Train Signal CCNA videos – they cover the whole gamut of router, switches, subnetting, VLANS, and more. Plus, they come with study questions and a lab book!

The conversation on this topic follows….
